And Just Like That: A ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot Without Samantha Jones

Banking on nostalgia, HBO Max announced a “Sex and the City” revival with the original cast minus one: Kim Cattrall. Neither Cattrall nor her character Samantha Jones will be part of the reboot.
Cattrall has been very open over the years about feeling both far removed from the show and frustrated with where it took her character. When a third “Sex and the City” movie looked like a possibility, for instance, she was clear that she wanted nothing to do with it even as her costars said the opposite.
“If I worried what every bitch in New York was saying about me, I’d never leave the house.”Samantha Jones (Sex and the City)
I was 17 when SATC came out. I initially thought the HBO series was soft core porn because of the saxophone heavy theme song. Instead, I was watching Girlfriends where I identified with the free-spirited Lynn but dreamt of becoming like Toni Childs. I didn’t immediately place the uncanny resemblance between Girt
I got into Sex and the City late into the series and like many young writers at the time, I watched every episode of the Sex and the City multiple times. I will not comment on the movies as I think they deserve to be judged separately and only the first movie is worth a damn, but I digress. I am very opinionated and critical of the show despite repeated consumption. My three major critiques are:
How is a show New York based with no Black people?
The obvious parallel between Sex and the City and Girlfriends… and the fact that Girlfriends was released first (see also: Friends is a bootleg Living Single)
Carrie character never fully owns its sex positive narrative because you mean to tell me homegirl was not a sugar baby? How did Carrie dine out every night and have a closet full of Manolo Blahniks on a writer’s salary then? And a name like Big… like, it was right there.
Enter Samantha Jones, Public Relations.
Samantha was the show’s sexual shock and relief. It would be difficult to Samantha’s character was made to be scandalous and boundary pushing, especially compared to white media but beneath the surface , Samantha Jones was really about it.
Three Samantha Jones Quotes from Sex and the City for modern life,
“Sweetheart, you can’t go listening to every fucking little voice that runs through your head. You’ll go nuts.”
Researchers say we have up to 70,000 thoughts per day. It would be chaos to give power to all of them.
“If I worried what every bitch in New York was saying about me, I’d never leave the house.”
Big IDGAFWABGTSAMIGDMR energy and we are here for it.
“I love you but I love me more.”
If you can’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else, can I get an Amen?
If there was ever a fictional character that refused to settle for less than a good time, it was Samantha. So whatever the show decides to do (or not do) with the iconic character, best believe Samantha Jones is somewhere unbothered.
